More than 100 structures destroyed in North Texas tornadoes

The National Weather Service has now confirmed there were a total of nine tornadoes that hit North Texas on Sunday night.

The newly confirmed tornadoes include: an EF-2 in southwest Garland with estimated winds of 135 miles per hour, an EF-1 tornado in Rockwall with estimated winds of 90 miles per hour, an EF-1 near Midlothian, an EF-1 in Kaufman County, an EF-0 in Kaufman County and an EZ-0 near Ferris.

Tornadoes previously confirmed included the mammoth EF-3 tornado in North Dallas, an EF-1 tornado in Rowlett and an EF-0 north of Wills Point in Van Zandt County.

Dallas ISD is making counselors available for students affected by the weekend tornadoes. The district says the counselors know about how to help students and families dealing with trauma. DISD also promises to create a welcoming environment when school re-starts for the dozen of schools still closed due to power outages or damage.

Rocky Vaz, director of the Dallas Office of Emergency Management, says a team of 20 people will work with Dallas Fire-Rescue Urban Search and Rescue to check neighborhoods for damage. Power crews are still restoring power to the hardest-hit areas. Public works crews are clearing storm debris from the streets, and the city will hire contractors to help with debris removal.

Dallas Fire-Rescue crews said after assessing surrounding areas there are 286 structures that sustained major damage and 104 buildings that were destroyed. Nearly 500 sustained minor or minimal damage.
