Congressman Elijah Cummings has passed away. The Maryland Democrat was 68 years old. A tweet from his office says he died this morning at approximately 2:45 Eastern time at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. The congressman had been suffering from "longstanding health challenges." Cummings served as Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, one of the committees overseeing the current impeachment inquiry of President Trump. A Baltimore native, Cummings represented Maryland's Seventh District in the House of Representatives since 1996.
President Trump tweeted, "My warmest condolences to the family and many friends of Congressman Elijah Cummings. I got to see first hand the strength, passion and wisdom of this highly respected political leader. His work and voice on so many fronts will be very hard, if not impossible, to replace!"
