Pop star Sam Smith is asking fans to use the pronouns to describe the singer after coming out as "non-binary" today. Smith wrote on Instagram that "after a lifetime of being at war with my gender, I've decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out." The singer added that they was "nervous about making the announcement because they care too much about what people think." The 27-year-old said they are surrounded by people who support the decision.
"Non-binary" is defined as "a spectrum of gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or exclusively feminine—identities that are outside the gender binary."
