Updated at 1:20 a.m. 7/6/19

There are still no deaths reported from the latest strong quake to shake Southern California. However, Kern County Fire Chief David Witt says there are several medical calls that are being followed up on. The magnitude 7.1 quake struck near Ridgecrest, not far from the 6.4 magnitude quake that hit on the Fourth of July. Chief Witt said he's very confident that the county has the resources it needs to respond to the quake. He said that there will be a systematic search of buildings in the area to look for people who may need help or significant damage.

Dozens of aftershocks are being reported following a large quake in Southern California. The USGS says two of the aftershocks are magnitude 5 while 16 aftershocks are magnitude 4. Some of the shaking has been felt as far away as Nevada. They expect the ground to keep shaking for quite some time due to Friday night's magnitude 7.1 quake. The epicenter is near Ridgecrest where a magnitude 6.4 struck just the other day/ Damage and injuries have been reported but no deaths.

CalTech seismologist Lucy Jones is telling other California residents that Friday's earthquake should serve as a warning for the rest of the state. She said that it happened near Ridgecrest, but it will eventually happen in more populated areas later. Jones said cities have learned a lot about making buildings safer in recent years. She urged people to help Ridgecrest residents now, because there will come a time when they will need help.
