Level Two Heat Advisory Issued as Temperatures Soar

The San Antonio Metro Health District has issued a Level Two Heat Advisory for today, as heat indexes are expected to soar to 108 degrees, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

The surface temperature is expected to reach 103 in the city today. The 'heat index' is like the 'wind chill factor' in the winter, its the impact on the human body caused by excessive heat and humidity.

“With the heat and humidity forecast for today and later this week, it is important for the community to keep in mind that excessive heat can pose a health threat” says Jennifer Herriott, Interim Metro Health Director. “Adults over 65, children under 4, and people with existing problems such as heart disease, and those without access to air conditioning are at highest risk.”

People are urged not to work outdoors for long periods of time without a break in an air conditioned room, and plenty of water should be consumed by everybody today.

Sunsroke, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion are all possible health effects when the temperatures get this high.
