McAllen To Acquire Building For Immigrant Shelter

The influx of immigrants is leading city leaders in McAllen to purchase a building to be used as a shelter. In the commissioners meeting Tuesday night, the decision was made to buy a vacant storefront on 15th Street and convert it into an immigrant shelter. City leaders say they have applied for a grant from the Federal Transit Authority they hope will come through, which if it does would cover most of the cost to purchase the 30-thousand square foot space. Once the site would no longer be needed for immigrants, the city plans to use it as part of Metro McAllen's office space.
