San Antonio Commanders edge Birmingham Iron

The San Antonio Commanders defeated the Birmingham Iron by a score of 12-11 on Sunday afternoon at Legion Field.

The Commanders found success on the ground all night, as they ran for 161 yards on 41 carries. Kenneth Farrow II led the way with an Alliance-record 142 yards and Trey Williams found the end zone on a 12-yard run in the third quarter. Logan Woodside completed 11 of his 25 passes for 106 yards, no TDs and no turnovers.

Birmingham utilized quarterback Luis Perez’ arm in the loss. Perez completed 19 of his 39 attempts for 202 yards, no TDs and two interceptions. The Iron finished the night with 85 rushing yards on 20 carries.

San Antonio scored the first points of the game on its first possession as Nick Rose split the uprights from 39 yards out with 2:24 to play in the first quarter. The field goal, which was Rose’s eighth of the season, capped a 21 play Commanders’ drive that covered 78 yards and took 9:34 off the clock.

Birmingham tied the game at 3-3 with 31 seconds to play in the first half on a 33-yard Nick Novak field goal. The score ended the Iron’s 12-play, 64-yard drive.

With Birmingham driving in the third quarter, San Antonio’s Zack Sanchez stepped in front of a Luis Perez pass at the Commanders’ 19-yard line, ending the Iron’s threat. On the ensuing possession, San Antonio marched 62 yards in seven plays with Trey Williams finding paydirt from 12 yards out for his first score of the season. The drive featured six runs, including a season-high 26 yarder by Farrow II.

Following a fumble recovery at the Birmingham 23-yard line, the Commanders marched down to the Iron 1-yard line but settled for a 20-yard field goal Nick Rose to make it 12-3.

Birmingham answered with a TD of its own when Trent Richardson capped off a 75-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run. After the score, Birmingham attempted an onside conversion play, but Perez was intercepted by Orion Stewart and the Commanders kneeled the ball to run out the clock.

San Antonio continues its four-game road swing on Sunday, March 10 at the Arizona Hotshots. The game, which will start at 7 p.m. and will be televised on NFL Network.
