Guilty Verdict In El Chapo Trial

A jury has found El Chapo guilty on all counts. Jurors had been deliberating for six days and combed through 200 hours of testimony, dozens of boxes of evidence and asked legal questions several times during three months of testimony in Brooklyn. Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the reputed leader of Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel, was facing ten charges of drug conspiracy and money laundering. The 61-year-old Guzman was extradited to the U.S. in 2017.

U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue says he expects Guzman to be sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole. Donoghue calls his conviction a victory for both the American and Mexican people. Donoghue says the verdict proves that Guzman and his partners were responsible for smuggling hundreds of tons of illegal drugs into the U.S. He called today a day of reckoning.

The defense attorney for El Chapo says his client was presumed guilty before the trial even began. Attorney Jeffrey Lichtman said he and his team were honored to represent Guzman and will continue to fight for the convicted drug lord.
