Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Suspends Broward County Sheriff

Sheriff Scott Israel of Broward County, Florida has been suspended following his department's response to a mass shooting at a Florida high school last year. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says he suspended Israel in a move to hold public officials accountable.  DeSantis confirmed that retired Coral Springs Police Sergeant Gregory Tony will serve as the new sheriff.  Tony will serve as Broward County's first black sheriff.  The parents of several of the shooting victims thanked DeSantis for bringing accountability to Broward County and stressed that they are excited for new leadership under Tony.  Seventeen people died in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine's Day last year.  Israel has faced heavy criticism for his agency's response in the shooting which sparked a nationwide movement for increased gun control.
