An afternoon scuffle with San Antonio police turned deadly for a man who investigators say was a known vehicle burglar, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
The incident unfolded shortly after 2 p.m. on a rain-soaked north side access road, and ended with the suspect dead, the officer who shot him on routine administrative leave, and a second officer shaken but uninjured despite having his Taser turned on him by the suspect.
Police Chief William McManus says a citizen spotted someone acting suspiciously while taking a license plate off of a Cadillac on the eastbound access road of Northeast Loop 410 near the IH-35 interchange and called police. Two officers arrived and confronted the individual.
McManus said when one of the patrolmen tried to handcuff the combative suspect, the officer reached for his Taser.
"He Tased the individual; it had no effect. He actually then took the Taser from the officer and Tased the officer," said McManus.
"At the same time he was reaching into his pocket where he had a knife," said McManus. "The cover officer fired multiple shots at him, and he was deceased on the scene."
The dead man's name was not immediately released, although McManus described him as being in his mid-30s and known to North Patrol officers as a confirmed vehicle burglar.
McManus says the officer who was Tased is a 14-year department veteran. The patrolman suffered no other injuries, McManus said.
