A routine traffic stop like dozens of local law enforcement officers conduct uneventfully every day turned tragic on San Antonios south side overnight, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
It started about 11PM Friday when a deputy spotted an SUV driving the wrong way down Quintana Rd.
On went the lights and siren as the deputy initiated a traffic stop yo try to determine the reason the vehicle was being operated improperly.
But the driver refused to pull over.
With other deputies participating, the arresting officer pursued the SUV as it wound through south side neighborhoods, apparently attempting to lose the lawman.
But at the intersection of Quintana and Lovett, while driving at a high rate of speed, the SUV smashed head-on into a utility pole.
EMS was immediately called and had to cut into the twisted wreckage to reach the two occupants, bith men in their thirties.
But it was too late. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Sheriffs Department is investigating the incident.
