Strong to Severe Storms Possible This Afternoon and Tonight
Area of Concern:
Greatest risk near and north of a Del Rio to Pleasanton to Victoria line (yellow and orange shaded area in the attached graphic)
Main Hazards:
Damaging straight-line winds and/or large hail with any severe stormsDangerous cloud to ground lightningIsolated pockets of heavy rainfall, primarily east of I-35 and I-37
Timing and Overview:
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible through the morning and midday hours across South Central Texas. We expected an increasing threat for thunderstorms, a few possibly strong to severe, in two rounds this afternoon and evening as a cold front and upper level disturbance move through the region.
First Round: A few storms capable of producing large hail and damaging wind gusts
2PM-6PM: Hill Country and portions of I-35 corridor6PM-9PM: East of I-35 and I-37
Second Round: A few storms capable of producing large hail and damaging wind gusts
6PM-9PM: southern Edwards Plateau, western Hill Country, and Rio Grande9PM-Midnight: eastern Hill Country and I-35 corridor
Also, those with outdoor Halloween activities this afternoon and evening should remain weather aware not only for strong to severe storms but the threat for cloud to ground lightning. If you are close enough to hear thunder you are at risk from being struck by lightning.
The system should move quick enough to preclude significant flooding. However a few pockets of heavier rainfall of 1-2" are possible, primarily east of I-35 and I-37, resulting in spotty, minor flooding.
Dry and cooler conditions are expected Thursday and Friday.
