On the eve of the vote on whether conservative Judge Bret Kavanaugh should be confirmed for the U.S. Supreme Court, Austin City Council on Thursday approved a strongly worded resolution in support of abortion rights, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
Called 'Rosie's Law,' the resolution honors Rosie Jimenez. The McAllen woman is believed to be the first person to die due to an unsafe abortion after she was denied a medical procedure under the 1976 Hyde Amendment, which barred the use of Medicaid and other federal funding for abortions.
Council member Leslie Pool called for a vote on the measure at this particular time to make a statement about the Kavanaugh nomination.
"If Judge Kavanaugh were to be confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court, then what tattered remnants remain of Roe v. Wade will be completely obliterated," she said.
Kathie Tovo, Austin's Mayor Pro Tem, says the vote also strikes a blow for equality.
"Such targeted restrictions represent the intersection of deeply entrenched economic injustice, racism, and gender inequity," she said.
The resolution, which has no force in law, was passed unanimously.
