No, it is not a violation of state law to have a Beto O'Rourke sign in your front yard.
News Radio 1200 WOAI reports that hundreds of residents in Texas cities, including San Antonio, have received formal-looking notices warning them that they are in violation and must remove their 'BETO' yard sign.
"It is informing the voters that if they do not remove the Beto sign from their yard, they will receive a citation and a fine for $500," Zenen Jaimes of the Texas Civil Rights Project told News Radio 1200 WOAI.
He said the letters claim to be from 'Texas.gov,' which is an official Texas web site, but the return address, in north Houston, is a fake.
The letter also contains giveaway language. At one point, it declares that 'this man is not worthy to run for office in the State of Texas,' referring to Beto O'Rourke.
Jaimes says this is nothing new in this very heated U.S. Senate campaign.
"Folks are trying to scare people into not voting, folks are trying to intimidate others," he said. "People on both sides have reported having thier yard signs stolen or torn up."
He says anybody who receives a letter this this should notify the Texas Secretary of State's office.
The Ted Cruz campaign said it had never heard about the scheme and had no hand in it.
