UTSA is launching a ten-year, $85 million expansion of its downtown campus, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
The planned growth includes a School of Data Science, a public- and private-sector cybersecurity collaborative, and a College of Business.
UTSA President Taylor Eighmy says the expansion is a commitment to San Antonio's "center city" area.
"Part and parcel to that is our obligation about being an urban-serving university and a community engaged university."
The fact that we have a foothold here in downtown with a downtown campus means we can take that opportunity and expand it," Eightmy says.
Under the plan, city and county downtown land parcels and buildings in the downtown area will be ceded to UTSA. Funding for the new facilities includes $70 million from the state's Permanent University Fund and $15 million in corporate donations.
UTSA also will ask the Texas Legislature to approve $126 million in tuition revenue bonds to fund the College of Business.
