Another Bexar County Deputy Arrested Today

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar says a deputy was arrested today by Selma Police on a charge of DWI, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Salazar identifies the Deputy as Joseph Martinez, who had been on the force since 2014 as a detention officer, but is not on the force any more.

"This afternoon at about 12:20, I actually went ot the jail and served Mr. Martinez with termination paperwork," he said.

A part time deputy who was arrested over the weekend for domestic violence was also personally terminated by Salazar.

He says Martinez could be fired because he was already on administrative leave following a series of incidents dating back to last summer.

Martinez is the 19th Bexar County Deputy to be arrested so far this year.

Salazar is instituting several measures to deal with the problem, like introducing an early intervention team inthe Sheriff's office.

"If I can identify somebody as having a drinking problem, maybe I'm able to get them the help that they need and salvage their career," he said.

Salazar recently asked Commissioners Court for permission to her a psychologist who will examine applicants for deputy jobs.

But he says the large number of deputy arrests is also because he has been actively looking, through an internal affairs office, for misbehaving deputies, and he says he has found some who have previously flown under the radar.
