Just when you thought things couldn't get any weirder, the wife of San Antonio U.S. Attorney John Bash is now being blasted on social media for the way she sat during Tuesday's confirmation hearing for U.S. Supreme Court Justice-designate Brett Kavanaugh, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
Zina Bash is also a lawyer, and both she and her husband are long time friends of Kavanaugh. Zina Bash is an attorney on the staff of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Several people on social media claimed that as Zina sat behind Kavanaugh in full view of TV cameras, she was making a top secret 'white power' symbol with her left hand.
As her hands rested on her arms during the hearing, her fingers appeared to be making the familiar 'okay' sign, where the thumb and forefinger are a circle and the other three fingers are extended.
But several internet memes, deriving from a claim on the web site 4chan, claim that this is actually a top secret 'white power' symbol, because the three extended fingers make out a 'W' as in 'White' and the thumb and forefinger look like the letter 'P.'
But nobody has been able to point to an incident where this familiar hand gesture was made in a way to represent 'white power.'
Bash tweeted this morning that the attacks are 'repulsive.'
"Everyone tweeting this vicious conspiracy theory should be ashamed of themselves," he wrote. "We weren't even familiar with the hateful symbol being attributed to her for the random way she rested her hand during a long hearing."
Bash pointed out that Zina's maternal grandparents are Holocaust survivors and Zina herself was born in Mexico, hardly the usual makeup of a 'white supremacist.'
"I hope that people will clearly condemn this idiotic and sickening accusation," Bash wrote.
One person tweeted a photo of Barack Obama making the exact same hand gesture, and asking if he is a 'white supremacist' too.
The ADL is among those debunking the claim that the 'okay' symbol is actually a symbol of 'white power.'
