Things are starting to look better at the gas pump, as the summer driving season winds down, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
AAA Texas says the average price of gas in San Antonio today is down two cents in the past week to $2.51 a gallon. That's down more than a dime since the height of the driving season in early July, but still more than 40 cents more than we were paying in mid August of 2017.
“Demand for retail gasoline has dropped week-to-week causing prices in many areas of Texas to fall,” said Daniel Armbruster, AAA Texas/AAA New Mexico spokesperson. “With Labor Day around the corner, demand could spike."
Analysts say a last minute summer travel spike could mean short term increases, but officials say in the coming months, the price should continue to drift downward. Generally the lowest gas prices of the year occur in late January to early February.
San Antonio no longer has the lowest gas prices in Texas. That honor now goes to McAllen, which is paying 2 cents less than San Antonio.
Gas prices in Texas are far lower than the national average of about $2.85 a gallon.
