Several area school districts get 'B' grades in the first ever Texas Education Agent Accountability ratings that rank schools like schools rank students, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
Among the school districts in the San Antonio pulling down 'B's are Northside, North East, San Antonio, Comal, Alamo Heights, New Braunfels, Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City, and Kerrville.
Some 'A' grades were awarded to top districts,including Boerne, Medina Valley, and the two military districts, Lackland and Fort Sam ISDs.
'C' grades go to the Hondo, Judson, Harlandale, and East Central ISDs, along with the San Antonio ISD, Somerset, and Southside.
'D' grades were handed out today to Edgewood, Pearsall, and South San.
And, flunking out in this year's rankings are Natalia and Uvalde ISD.
On individual schools, as usual, Northside's Health Careers High School ranked among the best public high schools in the country.
Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath says the new type of grading also takes into consideration the progress, or lack of progress, a district is achieving.
"One of the most important questions you need to be able to answer when you are governing a school system is are our schools getting better or are they getting worse," Morath said. "Absent this sort of high level, easy to follow overview, it is actually quiet difficult for school board members to know that."
Individual schools received a number rating out of 100, but Morath says individual schools will get letter grades too next year.
Morath says his is far easier for parents to comprehend than the old 'Exemplary' and 'Meeting Standards' grading.
A total of 157 Texas school districts got 'A' grades, while 15 districts got 'F.'
