President Donald Trump's border wall could cost billions more than he claims according to a new report out from the general accounting office, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.
The government watchdog group slammed the White House for going forward with plans without key information, including any assessment of costs or how it work in different terrains.
That could waste time and money, the report says.
"DHS faces an increased risk that the Border Wall System Program will cost more than projected, take longer than planned, or not fully perform as expected," the GAO concluded.
San Antonio Congressman Joaquin Castro was not surprised by the findings."This GAO report shows U.S. Customs and Border Protection lacked due diligence when analyzing the construction of a border wall between the United States and Mexico," he tells Newsradio 1200 WOAI's Michael Board. "The majority of Texans are against this wall, and spending billions of dollars to build it would be a gross misuse of taxpayer money."
One group that's been outspoken against the wall is the Texas Border Coalition. Monica Weisberg-Stewart says there are enough red flags in the report to pause the project.
"If we are truly trying to do a benefit, let’s follow the process just to make sure that what we are doing is going to have the benefit that everyone is expecting," she says.
Top of her concern is the lack of study on how the wall would affect the terrain of South Texas. She says water has backed up into areas, causing a true environmental concern.
