A man in his forties was killed early today when he tried to run across a darkened stretch of Northwest Military Highway away from a marked crosswalk and was hit by a vehicle,, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
Police say the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident happened just south of Hardberger Park.
Witnesses told police they saw a red car speed away and turn into an apartment complex on Braesview Dr. Police now say the car stopped about a block away and the driver helped with the investigation and is not expected to face charges.
The victim is identified as Kenneth Tanner, 40.
.San Antonio has a seemingly unsolvable problem of pedestrians trying to run across busy streets, sometimes just yards from a lighted, marked crosswalk. Several people have been badly hurt and killed attempting to dash across busy streets in the past several months.
