Two Fired Bexar Deputies Charged with Smuggling Meth to Jail Inmates

Two now fired Bexar County Sheriff's Deputies were arrested today on charges of smuggling meth to inmates in the Bexar County Jail, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

A federal indictment claims fired Deputies Gabriel  Ortiz, 29, and Ruben Hernandez, 26, are each charged with one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetimine.  Each faces up to twenty years in federal prison.

"I am disappointed, very disappointed," Sheriff Javier Salazar said.  "Its a shame that I have 1500 deputies who came to work today and did it right.  I have two who took it upon themselves to dishonor this badge."

Salazar said he will 'make it my mission' to root out corruption in his agency.

"Nobody despises a crooked cop more than a good cop," FBI Special Agent in Charge Chris Combs said.  "We will go out of our way to find corruption in law enforcement."

Salazar said he first received information about the deputies in May."I reached out to the local field office thorough out deputy who is assigned to the FBI," he said.  "We set up a sting operation at the Bexar County Jail, and these deputies committed the crimes that they are accused of today."

He says the deputies were fired on that day.  The deputies were arrested this morning. This has been a busy day at the Sheriff's office.  Earlier today, another probationary deputy was arrested on charges of drunk driving.
