Key Zetas Cartel Leader Convicted in Texas Court, Faces Life in Prison

A top leader of the infamous Zetas drug cartel is learning the hard way that its a lot harder to buy off judges and intimidate jurors here than it is back home in Mexico, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports

.Kiko Trevino Chavez, 38, who is the nephew of the former Mexican special forces solders who founded the Zetas, has been convicted on all counts in a U.S. District Courtroom in Waco.  He was arrested in Baytown Texas, following the embarrassing escape of Sinaloa Cartel leader 'El Chapo' Guzman from a 'high security' Mexican prison.

Trevino was charged with numerous counts, including  conspiracy to possess marijuana with intent to distribute, conspiracy to import marijuana, unlawful distribution of controlled substances (extra-territorial), conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute, conspiracy to import cocaine, conspiracy to possess firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The feds say Trevino was in charge of transporting a quarter million kilos of cocaine into the U.S. during his time at the helm of the Zetas, which are known as among the most violent of the several ultra violent drug cartels in Mexico.

When Trevino was arrested he was the head of an offshoot of the Zetas, called Cartel Del Noreste.

Trevino remains under guard in a federal prison in the U.S., and he expected to be sentenced to life in prison when he next appears before a judge later this year.
