Chris Young Executed for 2004 Murder

The violent life of Christopher Young of San Antonio is set to come to an end in the death chamber in Huntsville tonight, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Young was condemned for a 2004 crime spree in which he carjacked a woman and raped her in front of your small child, then shot and killed a southeast side convenience store clerk during a robbery.

After the murder, Young allegedly hired a hooker and took meth until police caught up with him.

Bexar County District Attorney Nico LaHood tells News Radio 1200 WOAI it is inaccurate to refer to what Young did as a 'crime spree.'

"Crime spree means I steal a bunch of candy bars," he said.  "That's a crime spree too.  This is an evil and demented crime spree."

Young has never denied that he committed the crimes.  He did not testify at his 2006 trial because his defense lawyer at the time was convinced prosecutors would not be able to prove that the convenience store owner was killed during a robbery because nothing was stolen.

Young has been requesting 'clemency,' which means he would remain in prison for life but would not be executed.  Death penalty opponents, religious figures like Sister Prejean of 'Dead Man Walking' fame have called for clemency, and even the victim's son urged the Board of Pardons and Paroles to set aside the sentence, claiming Young is a 'changed man' since 2004.

On Friday, the Board unanimously rejected the clemency request.

LaHood doesn't buy it.

"He is entitled to that opinion, but I do believe that the board did the right thing by denying his request," he said.  "There is nothing unjust about what is going to happen to him."
