The U.S. Border Patrol in in the Eagle Pass station say they apprehended a member of the infamous Salvadoran gang MS-13 attempting to sneak into the U.S. over the weekend, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
MS-13 is the viciously brutal gang that has been cited by President Trump on several occasions as a main reason why he wants to crack down on illegal immigration.
Del Rio Border Patrol Sector Chief Felix Chavez identifies the suspect as a 35 year old Honduran national, who was attempting to make illegal entry into the U.S. by crossing the Rio Grande. When he was being processed by agents, they determined he is a member of the gang, whose real name is Mara Salvatrucha.
“This arrest serves to remind us of the unknown factors our agents face on a daily basis. Some illegal aliens are dangerous criminals,” Chavez said. “I am proud of our agents as they face these hazards every day, keeping our communities safe and our borders secure.”
The gang member was charged with illegal entry and will face deportation.
He is the sixth known member of a violent Latin American gang to be arrested trying to sneak into the U.S. in the past month in the Eagle Pass sector. Speculation is that the gang leaders in Honduras, Mexico, and El Salvador hope to take advantage of the current border chaos to place more operatives in the country.
