ICE Notifies Hundreds of Valley Landowners--the Border Wall is Coming

Hundreds of landowners along the Texas - Mexico border have received a letter they've been dreading, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.

Congressman Henry Cuellar says the Trump White House has begun sending another round of notices of property owners south of Falcon Lake, demanding access to their land so a survey can be done for the border wall.

"More than 200 requests were sent out, throughout the Rio Grande Valley, from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers which is acting on behalf of Customs Border Protection," he says.

This comes as the surge of illegal immigration continues on the southern border.  Some 42,000 migrants arrived in June, according to the latest number from Customs Border Protection.

Cuellar (D-Laredo) says the letters do not mean construction is imminent.

"This could talk time, especially if a landowner is saying, 'I believe in private property rights. Big government you are not going to come in and take my land away.'"

So far, the government has received 38 positive responses, meaning they will be allowed to survey the land. Four landowners told the government they are not allowed on the land and 23 requests are still pending.

One of those requests that is still pending is for the Rio Grande City School District.

There are concerns that the campus could be compromised.

Under the George W. Bush administration, there was a proposal to build a wall that would have separated the campus of U.T. Brownsville.  That was eventually changed.
