Multiple Cases of Intestinal Disease Linked to Produce Seen in Bexar County

The Texas Department of State Health Services says it is investigating 56 cases of illness due to Cyclospora, a parasite most commonly associated with imported fresh produce, especially cilantro, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Eleven of the cases have been reported in Bexar County.

Cyclosporiasis is a miserable condition, with symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever, and the symptoms could last for several months.

Doctors are being urged by the State Health Department to test patients who present with these symptoms for cyclospora.

You are urged to carefully wash all produce, especially cilantro, and public health officials are urged to immediately report new cases so the source can be tracked down.

Cyclosporaisis is not uncommon in Texas, with 319 cses reported in 2017.
