Hazardous Materials crews had to be scrambled early today when a major fire broke out at the city's largest scrap metal recycling facility, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
When firefighters arrived at Monterrey Iron & Metal at General Hudnell and Frio City Road on the west side, smoke and flames were already shooting out of the building.
More than two dozen fire trucks rushed to the scene.
What bothered crews the most was the foam inside the upholstery of cars being recycled, because many of those foams can emit very toxic chemicals.
The fire department used several chemicals to retard the smoke from the chemicals, while fighting the fire with water from the fire plugs.
Crews finally got the fire under control, but fire united remained on the scene after daylight to guard against 'hot spots.'
There is no word on the cause of the fire or a damage estimate.
