Frontier Airlines today announced nine new non stop flights out of San Antonio International Airport, including some with ticket prices as low as $29, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
Airport Director Russ Handy says Frontier, which just began flying out of SAT last year, will now have 23 non stop destinations.
"Today represents the single largest air service announcement in the history of San Antonio International Airport," Handy said.
Some of the new Frontier destinations include Jacksonville, Columbus, Omaha, and Cleveland.
"Frontier now has service to 23 separate destinations," Frontier's Daniel Schurz said. "This will make Frontier the largest carrier at San Antonio International Airport by destinations served."
Mayor Nirenberg says adding new service to SAT has been a top priority of his administration.
"Since the spring of 2016, we've added 31 new routes, including 18 new non-stop markets, and an expansion into 13 additional underserved markets," he said.
A lack of non stop flights out of SAT has long been criticized as holding back San Antonio's economic growth, and County Judge Nelson Wolff cited that lack of non stops when he and Nirenberg decided not to invite Amazon.com to consider San Antonio for its second headquarters.
Tech executive and Trump 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale moved a large portion of his San Antonio based company to Florida in 2017, citing the annoyance of having to change planes in Dallas or Houston to get to many destinations.
San Antonio still lacks a flight to Europe, and the long awaited non stop to Washington Reagan National, both of which are present at Austin's Bergstrom airport 70 miles away.
