SAISD More Than Doubled Number of Teachers to be Cut

San Antonio ISD Superintendent Pedro Martinez confirmed Monday night that 132 teachers will be cut, and other reductions will be made by attrition, and those two steps will address only $18 million of the districts $42 million estimated shortfall for the coming school year, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

The teaching jobs to be cut will be spread almost evenly between contract and probationary teachers.

The district had previously said 60 teachers  would be cut.

Martinez blames declining enrollment, especially in inner city schools, for the shortfall.  Fewer students means less state aid to education funding.

Martinez is facing a tough crowd tonight, as teacher groups are criticizing his Reduction in Force plans, with some suggesting that the first cuts should be made in Martinez $280,000 a year salary.

Martinez says even with the RIF and attrition, the district will still be overstaffed heading into the 2018-2019 school year.
