Watch Out--Spring Activity Can Easily Land You in the E.R.

With the weather turning into spring and more people engaging in outdoor activities, they're clearing the decks at TSAOG Orthopaedics, getting ready for  a rush of patients, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Sports medicine specialist Dr. Lane Naugher says adults who have largely been sedentary throughout the cold winter will head out for baseball, swimming, running, and other activities, and many will try to push it too far.

"As we age we do need a little bit of a warmup," it said.  "It is never a bad idea to try to stretch a little bit, or to ramp up gradually.  Don't jump right in the what the kids may be doing."

Spring softball and baseball games alone send nearly 400,000 Americans to the ER every spring.

Dr. Naugher says even spring cleaning can land people in his clinic.

"The shoulder can be tough, it can cause problems, especially repeated motions overhead, like lifting for stuff overhead and reaching."

And then there are people who climb up on the roof to get rid of the leaves and oak pollen that accumulate up there during the winter.  He says they are prime candidates for a trip to TSAOG Orthopaedics.
