Annual Fiesta Preview Highlights This Year's Tricentennial Fiesta

From the Final Four to the Tricentennial, there is plenty happening in San Antonio these days, but there is nothing that tops Fiesta, and from crowns on heads to medals on chests, there was Fiesta Fever at the Pearl for the annual Fiesta Preview, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Fiesta 2018 opens April 19th and runs through April 29th, and King Antonio, otherwise known as attorney Richard Sparr, says the Texas Cavaliers will make it into a festival of giving for the Cavaliers targeted group, children.

"We are going to be giving away over $1 million to the needy kids of San Antonio, and that is going to really make a differnece," His Majesty said.  "These are the kids who are forgotten, who are abused."

This year, all of the Fiesta favorites, from NIOSA, Oyster Bake, the River, Flambeau and Battle of Flowers Parades, Carnival and Taste of New Orleans, will all have a Tricentennial focus, along with the usual fun and community.

"Fiesta is the time each year when every part of the city, every ethnicity, every culture, comes together in celebration of our history and the diversity that makes us the community we are," Fiesta Commission Executive Director Amy Shaw said.  "There is something for everyone..great food, live music, the biggest and best parades, fitness fun and so much more.  And all of the proceeds support great non profit causes."

Fiesta San Antonio is marking 127 years during the year thar San Antonio is marking 300 years.

Shaw says 100 local organizations and 75,000 volunteers stage Fiesta events.

There will be more than a dozen new Fiesta attractions this year, including an event sponsored by the San Antonio Zoo to celebrate the animals of Texas and Latin America.

This will be Ron Nirenberg's first Fiesta as Mayor and he is pumped!

"The Party with a Purpose has grown from one parade honoring the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto into an 11-day festival that celebrates San Antonio's rich and diverse cultural history," he said.

In fact, for much of its history, Fiesta was formally called Fiesta San Jacinto, until the name was changed to avoid offending Mexico.

King Antonio says Fiesta  will be the perfect time to celebrate San Antonio's Tricentennial, which officially occurs in early May, shortly after Fiesta comes to a close.

"The people of San Antonio are always special, the culture, and let's not forget the food," he said.  "Who doesn't love what's out there during Fiesta!"
