The Senate Majority Leader says U.S. gas prices should be dropping as global oil prices decline.
New York Democrat Chuck Schumer said U.S. oil companies are enjoying an "avalanche" of cash while drivers continue to suffer.
Opening the Senate, Schumer said they would rather reward shareholders than help families struggling with soaring gas prices.
Schumer said top U.S. oil company executives will soon be summoned to explain their actions.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell criticized Democratic messaging on the rising gas prices, saying they're blaming Russian President Vladimir Putin over the invasion of Ukraine.
He described Democratic energy policies as confusing, hypocritical and faulty.
