President Biden is pushing hard for final passage of his sweeping social spending bill.
Biden outlined a revamped framework in a White House speech, covering $1.75 trillion in spending. Biden called it an historic economic deal. He insisted it is "fully paid for."
Biden argued that the framework will create jobs while helping the U.S. become more competitive in the global marketplace. The original pricetag of the measure was $3.5 trillion. The proposed bill has been pared down in a dispute between Democratic progressives and moderates in the House and Senate.
The President said, "No one got everything they wanted." He added, "Compromise and consensus are the only ways to get things done."
The framework expands the social safety net while making a significant investment in the fight against climate change. Biden has little margin for error with a razor thin majority in the House and a 50-50 Senate. Vice President Harris can act as a tiebreaker in the Senate.
The President's White House remarks followed a closed-door meeting with House Democrats at the Capitol.
