On Thursday, the Supreme Court of Virginia approved the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
The ruling came despite two lawsuits attempting to block the removal of the monument.
According to Attorney General Mark Herring, the state's modern values are not reflected in the monument.
“Today is an historic day in Virginia. Today, we turn the page to a new chapter in our Commonwealth’s history – one of growth, openness, healing, and hope,” said Herring.
Meanwhile, the city of Richmond has removed more than a dozen Confederate-based statues since the death of George Floyd.
