A New Jersey school is getting a new name due to its slave-owning namesake.
Officials voted Monday to rename Jefferson Elementary School in the South Orange Maplewood District.
They say they want to move away from its connection to one of the nation's founding fathers, President Thomas Jefferson, who was also a slave owner.
The Board of Education has indicated the school will be working with students to solicit potential name proposals with a new name expected sometime next year.
