Transgender runner CeCe Telfer will not be permitted to compete in the U.S. Olympic trials ahead of next month's Tokyo Games.
Telfer, a former NCAA Div. II champion in the 400m hurdles, was ruled ineligible according to regulations that require trans athletes to have testosterone levels below a certain threshold.
Her agent said Telfer will respect the decision, telling reporters "“CeCe has turned her focus towards the future and is continuing to train. She will compete on the national — and world — stage again soon".
At least one transgender athlete will compete in Tokyo - New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard qualified for the Olympics earlier this month.
