More than 22 Republican-led states have announced plans to cancel the $300 per week federal unemployment assistance program - and the White House says there's nothing it can do about it.
Per CNN, a Labor Department official says the federal government won't be able to keep paying the benefits in those states. The official told the network it tried to come up with a solution but that "there's nothing we can do".
That means that about 3.6 million Americans will miss out on more than $27 billion in benefits in those states.
Some say the $300 per week bonus is keeping people from looking for work, even though employers are hiring. The program is scheduled to end in September.
