The Supreme Court is paving the way for the FCC to loosen local media ownership rules.
The ruling gives broadcasters a victory and could accelerate industry consolidation. The unanimous ruling overturned a lower court decision that had blocked the FCC's repeal of some regulations in 2017 for failing to consider the effects on ownership by racial minorities along with women.
Critics have said further consolidation would limit choice for consumers. Major companies and local affiliates backed the appeals, saying consolidation would help the outlets survive as digital competition takes a stronger hold on advertising dollars.
