South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has signed off on two executive orders banning transgender athletes from competing on scholastic women's sports teams. One order applies to college sports, and the other to K-12 schools.
The move comes after Noem refused to sign off on a GOP bill enacting a similar ban - concerned that it could have "significant unintended consequences" and possibly be overturned in court.
Two states - Mississippi and Arkansas - have enacted transgender sports bans so far this year, and dozens of states are considering similar bills.
