The CEOs of Facebook, Twitter and Google are being pressed on the spread of misinformation on social media.
Pennsylvania Democrat Mike Doyle opened a virtual House hearing and said the nation is drowning in waves of misinformation and disinformation on social media. He said the growing power of social media is awesome and terrifying.
Ohio Republican Bob Latta said social media giants wield enormous power over thoughts and ideas. He questioned the companies' commitment to policing misinformation.
Doyle argued that the lead up to the January 6th attack on the Capitol was nourished on social media platforms. He also cited misleading and false information on the coronavirus vaccines.
Florida Republican Gus Bilirakis accused social media giants of treating conservatives unfairly. He said many of his constituents "do not trust you anymore."
