Virginia is one step closer to getting rid of the death penalty.
The state Senate approved a measure to do that Wednesday while a similar bill moved forward in the House.
The two chambers would need to work out the differences in the measures before sending it to Governor Ralph Northam for his signature. Northam has voiced his support for ending capital punishment.
The Washington Post noted Virginia would be the first Southern state to end the practice if it's signed.
