Senate Democrats are moving toward passage of a sweeping coronavirus stimulus package without any Republican support.
The Senate narrowly passed a measure setting up a vote on a budget resolution. That will lead to a procedural move known as reconciliation.
The House is expected to follow suit. Both parties have pulled the trigger on reconciliation while controlling both the Senate and House in past years. Many Republicans have expressed doubts about the cost of a Democratic stimulus package of nearly two-trillion dollars.
Democrats argue that a new stimulus is urgently needed and must be big and bold. A group of 10 Senate Republicans is proposing a much smaller stimulus measure.
