Battle Lines Clear In Barrett Supreme Court Fight

Judge Amy Coney Barrett

The battle lines are clear in the Senate confirmation fight over federal Judge Amy Coney Barrett.

President Trump recently nominated the conservative Barrett to replace the late liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham opened hearings in the Judiciary Committee and said the Senate is "doing its duty constitutionally."

Illinois Democrat Richard Durbin argued that the Supreme Court vacancy should not be filled until the winner of the upcoming presidential election is determined.

Vermont Democrat Pat Leahy said Barrett would be the definitive vote in killing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. He warned that it would lead to disastrous consequences, including an end to protections for those with pre-existing conditions.

Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley called the assertions ridiculous. He insisted that Barrett will be an independent justice.

Barrett is a federal judge in Indiana. Her confirmation would create a 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court.
