The U.S. will pull out more than a third of the troops currently stationed in Iraq by the end of this month.
The top American commander in the Middle East, General Kenneth McKenzie, told reporters today troop strength will be reduced from about 5200 to three thousand during September.
That's about the level of U.S. forces in Iraq five years ago. McKenzie said the troops who remain will continue to advise and assist Iraqi security forces in "rooting out the final remnants" of ISIS.
