Many city leaders in Houston are pushing for a lockdown as the number of coronavirus cases hit almost 28,000 over the weekend.
Harris County, where Houston is located, is the most populous county in the Lone Star State.
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo tweeted on Sunday, "Not only do we need a stay at home order now, but we need to stick with it this time until the hospitalization curve comes down, not just flattens."
The governor of Texas, who had previously resisted a mandatory mask order, is also now warning the state will need to "lockdown further" if case numbers don't drop.
The U.S. Army Northern Command confirmed Sunday that it has sent 580 military medical personnel to Texas hospitals to help care for coronavirus patients.
