Committee Signs Off on Making Washington DC a State

The U.S. flag could soon be getting another star.

The House Oversight Committee on Tuesday approved a bill that seeks to make Washington D.C. the country's 51st state. The approval came despite objections from the committee's Republican minority, sources say. The bill next heads to the House for approval.

"Today is an historic day," says Stasha Rhodes, an advocate for making the nation's capitol a state. "This is the closest we have come to realizing a 200-year-old goal of granting full representation to the residents of Washington D.C."
