Nearly 50-thousand GM workers are on strike

United Auto Workers Begin Largest National Strike Since 1982

General Motors workers across the country are officially on strike. Approximately 49-thousand workers walked off the job at midnight and have been picketing outside GM plants. The United Auto Workers says workers are demanding fair wages, affordable healthcare and a fair share of profits.

Negotiations are reportedly continuing between General Motors and the United Auto Workers Union this morning. The Union said the strike was called for because only two-percent of a new contract had been worked out. The strike delayed some workers at the Lake Orion plant this morning. General Motors released a statement saying they made a strong offer to the union including over seven-billion dollars in investments, and solutions for recently closed assembly plants in Michigan and Ohio.

The last time GM workers walked off the job was in 2007. That strike lasted for two days and cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars.
