President Trump says his new immigration reform plan will "help all of our people." Speaking at the White House today, Trump said it will create a fair, modern and lawful immigration system. Trump insisted that his plan fully secures the southern border with a massive wall. He stressed that the plan will stop the smuggling of migrant children and will fix a broken asylum system. He also took a shot at Democrats, saying they are for open borders and "lawless chaos." The Trump plan is expected to go nowhere in the divided Congress.
The plan aims to move the U.S. toward a merit-base immigration system, giving a preference to highly skilled and educated migrants. The White House has said the plan does not address Dreamers, the millions of young men and women who were brought into the U.S. illegally as children. The plan also contains no path to citizenship for immigrants who are living in the U.S. Democrats have complained that they were not consulted during the crafting of the immigration plan.
