Sen. Flake Reveals How Lawmakers Protected Congressman's 10-Year-Old Son

Among the staffers and congressmen who were quick to spring into action was Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AR) and other members who instinctively protected the 10-year-old son of Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX).

Unsure if there was more than one shooter at first, Sen. Flake explains that he eventually saw the lone shooter behind the fence. Seeing that the shooter still had a line of fire into the dugout, he and others got everyone under the dugout.

According to Flake, the lawmakers grabbed the boy and hid him under the bench of the dugout, protecting him from any gunfire.

“Joe Barton's boy was here, 10-year-old, just shagging balls, and we got him into the dugout and stuffed him under the bench.”
